Introductory Course

Learn the ropes! For first-time climbers we offer a special two-hour intro class. No prior climbing experience or gear is required.

The cost cost includes:

  • Gym Day Entry
  • Two hours of instruction with one of our professional guides
  • Gear

GOAL: To learn the skills required to climb on top-rope (TR) in the climbing gym.

In addition, the course fee includes the following benefits:

  • Free belay test the next time you come in
  • Free climbing for 7 days directly after completion of the course
  • 50% off Join Fee

The course covers the use of the basic equipment, namely harness, climbing shoes, ropes and knots, karabiners and belay devices. We discuss climbing terminology. Then we teach belay techniques and safety procedures.

Climbing is a partner activity. One person climbs while the partner manages the safety rope. This process is called belaying the climber. After the intro course you should be able to pass our belay test, which will allow you to safely climb with a partner at CityROCK.

Intro courses are held on a regular basis, typically Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm, other times available upon request. Please call us on 021-447-1326 to book.

Please dress casually, bring a thin pair of socks, and be at CityROCK 15 minutes prior to the course starting.

Some press coverage on our gym and the intro course appears below. They are well worth reading.

Rob Peters from web portal iafrica.com did our intro course recently. In Cliffhanging 101, he writes: “The intro course, quite understandably, focuses on safety procedures along with the basic equipment (harness), knots and belaying techniques.”

Narina Exelby, Editor for Horizons Magazine discovered that our sport is “an addictive activity”. Download the full article called Urban Creep (article is 400KB and requires Adobe PDF to view).

About half of our customers are women. That’s because climbing is a lot more than just physical strength. Technique and your mental problem-solving ability are just as important. Lucy Olden did our course and wrote about it for Marie Claire. Read her story entitled Body Language. (800KB Adobe PDF article).

Andy Ellis, the editor of Mens Health, wrote about his Intro Course experience at CityROCK. You can read his article entitled I wanna rock here (the link redirects you to the Mens Health magazine web site).

Parents who want to enjoy CityROCK with their kids will also need to take this course in order to safely belay their kids.

Lead Course *

For the more experienced climber we teach all the skills needed to lead-climb in the gym. Please contact us for details of our next lead class. After doing the lead class you can do our lead test.
*pre=requisit Top Rope Course.

Technique Course

Our technique course consists of two one-hour sessions. These are typically held Thursday from 6-7pm. Each week there is a different theme or focus and appeals to the novice climber as well as the more experienced climber. Do you feel as though you can’t get past a particular grade? This course is for you! You can take it as often as you like, your climbing will only get better! Call us or email info@cityrock.co.za to book.

Personalized Courses and Training

We can design a course just for you, just let us know what you are looking for and our experienced instructors will work with you to design a course that suits you. We also offer personal training to help you work on your climbing technique.
